Make Inhaled Treatments Accessible for All

Every year, on the first Tuesday of May, World Asthma Day is celebrated. This year it is being celebrated on 6th May.

The theme for World Asthma Day 2025 is "Make Inhaled Treatments Accessible for All"

The day helps raise awareness about this common respiratory condition. Asthma or bronchial asthma is a condition that affects millions and the primary symptom of the disease is difficulty breathing. Here, we share some of the common symptoms that people suffering from asthma may face. The incidence may vary from 9 to 20 percent in children and is one of the commonest childhood conditions.

Understanding asthma

Asthma is caused due to hyper reactive airways. The airways in the lungs become overly sensitive and gets narrowed in response to allergens, viruses, pollutants etc. Due to the narrowing of the airways, individuals tend to have breathing difficulties that can present as cough or wheezing. Intense physical activity can also make breathing more difficult for people with asthma.

The asthma symptoms, their severity and frequency can vary from person to person. For some, the symptoms appear occasionally, while for others they are more common.

Common asthma symptoms

  • Wheezing: People may notice a whistling sound when they breathe.
  • Shortness of breath: People suffering from asthma also have a feeling of not being able to draw enough air in, which leads to a discomfort in their chest.
  • Coughing: Many individuals face a persistent cough that tends to get worse during laughter or when performing strenuous physical activity.

Variations in symptoms

  • Night-time asthma: In some cases, the asthma symptoms tend to get progressively worse at night. This can cause sleep disturbances, which lead to other health disorders.
  • Exercise-induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB): For some, the coughing and wheezing primarily occur during or just after exercise.
  • Occupational asthma: Individuals may be exposed to harsh chemicals or dust in their workplace, which can make asthma symptoms worse.

The importance of early recognition

Recognising the symptoms early on can help people to seek medical intervention and ensure proper management of the condition. Otherwise, the condition may progress too far if left unchecked and create lung complications.

Diagnosis and management

Asthma is primarily a clinical diagnosis and a thorough physical examination and the patient's medical history is enough to make the correct diagnosis, in most cases but in some cases tests like Lung spirometer or Lung Oscillometry may be advised by the doctors.

With this doctors can create an individualised management plan that involves :

  • Inhaled medications: Inhalers can help manage sudden symptoms and also act as long-term medications.
  • Identifying and avoiding triggers: Doctors can help a patient to identify their asthma triggers, such as dust or pollen. This identification makes it easier to avoid the triggers and prevent asthma attacks.
