Dr. Sujit Kar Purkayastha Dr Sujit Kar Purkayastha graduated from Assam Medical College,
Silchar in 1972 and, after completing  his  internship, moved  to Kolkata where he started his
training as a junior doctor in IPGME&R. He did his MD in General Medicine before going
to the  United  Kingdom in 1980  for further  training. He  trained  in  many  hospitals
including  teaching  hospitals  and  obtained  the  MRCP  qualification  from  the  UK.
Subsequently, in 1988, he joined the North West Area Armed Forces Hospital in Saudi
Arabia and worked there as a Consultant Physician. He also became Chairman of the
Medical Education Committee of that hospital and structured the complete  education
programme there. Primarily as a result of his initiatives,  the hospital was  recognised
as a teaching hospital, and Dr. Kar Purkayastha was rewarded by the Ministry of Defence
and Aviation, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for his services to medical education.

Dr. Kar Purkayastha  returned to the UK  in 1990 and  continued his work in  Walton  Hospital
and later in Fazakerley Hospital, Liverpool in the internationally renowned Gastroenterology
Department. In 1993, he moved back to Kolkata and joined Peerless Hospital where he helped
to set up the Gastroenterology unit. In 1997, because of personal reasons, he returned to the
UK and worked as a Consultant Physician at Bassetlaw Hospital until 2010. He was accredited
as “Physician as Educator” by the Royal College of Physicians and also became an examiner for
the MRCP. He became a Fellow (FRCP) of the Glasgow and London Colleges in 1998 and
2002 respectively.

During his years in the UK, Dr Kar Purkayastha carried out several clinical audits and published
research papers in peer reviewed international medical journals. He was heavily involved in the
medical education of junior doctors and medical students from Sheffield University. He was a Royal
College tutor for a number of years and organised MRCP PACES examination in the hospital at
which he worked. Following retirement, he was awarded the honorary position of Emeritus
Consultant of Doncaster & Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Trust.

Dr Kar Purkayastha joined Peerless Hospital as Medical Director in 2010 and since then has been
trying to develop new services in the hospital. He is very interested in medical ethics and his
personal ambition is to develop Peerless Hospital into the most trusted, transparent and
morally responsible hospital in the country.

Mr. Sankarashis Sen   has  over  45  Years  of  experience  in Sales, Marketing & total
management in   various  capacity  from  grass  root  level including:- 8 years as country
manager (General Manager-India) with  Pfizer-Howmedica,  10  years  as  Managing Director
of DePuy  India,   a  wholly   owned subsidiary  of  Johnson  &  Johnson  Inc.  USA.  He is
currently   working   as   Chief   Advisor  to   DePuy-Johnson & Johnson for strategy &
Business    development. 

 

Dr. Gautam Sen is Emeritus professor of Surgery, Grant Medical College, University
of Bombay. He is  President and  Founder Secretary  General Association for Trauma
Care of India. He heads a Medical Foundation, Health Care International, whose
primary thrust  area  is to establish Continuing Professional Development course in
India, so that our doctors, nurses and health care administrators become safer, up to
date in   knowledge  and  skills  so  that  they  become  responsible  health  care
providers  to face the challenges of 21st Century needs. He is Director of Surgical
Education,   Association   of   Surgeons   of   India   (ASI),   premier  apex body of
Surgeons of all specialties in India. He has been teacher and examiner in Surgery
for University  of Bombay, National Board of Examination, Tribhuvan University of
Medical Sciences,  Nepal,  National Academy of Medical Sciences, Nepal, The Royal
College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and The Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow.
Prof. Sen’s main interest is in issues relating to reforms in Medical Education in
general and Postgraduate Surgical Education in particular.
